Ambassador Giovanni FAVILLI was born in the hilly Tuscan city of Siena in 1968. He is married with three children (one boy and two girls). He studied classics at E.S. Piccolomini Lyceum in Siena and graduated in law at the Universities of Siena (cum laude in 1992) and Barcelona, Spain (1997). He also studied in Leiden, the Netherlands (1990), Sussex University in Brighton, Great Britain (1992) and College of Europe of Brugge, Belgium, where he obtained a master in European Law (LL.M., 1994). He is a qualified attorney in Italy and Spain, Knight in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and speaks English, French and Spanish.

He started working at law firm Covington & Burling in London, Great Britain, in 1996 and was later a liaison officer at the Tirana office (Albania) of the Council of Europe between September 1997 and October 1998.

On December 31st, 1998, Giovanni Favilli entered the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After training at the Diplomatic Institute, he worked at the Directorate General of Human Resources, dealing with recruiting, Italian personnel in international organizations, personnel status and publications. From October 15th to August 2005, he was commercial secretary at the Embassy of Italy in Hanoi, working on commercial and political matters and development cooperation projects. From 22 August 2005 he was deputy consul and then consul (number two) at the Consulate General of Italy in New York. On July 2nd 2008 he was promoted to the rank of counselor.

Back in Rome from August 25th 2009, he was again at the Directorate General for Human Resources as a head of the office in charge of recruitment and Italian personnel in international organizations. 

He has been consul general of Italy in Dubai from 6 August 2012 until 8 September 2016, where he attended to a fast growing Italian community in the main export destination for Italian products in the Middle East and North Africa.

Since 12 September 2016 he is Ambassador of Italy in Ghana, accredited also to Togo.
